Alicante, Spain: Man Hospitalised In Ebola Virus Scare

A young man has been admitted to hospital in the city of Alicante showing symptoms of the deadly Ebola virus, Spanish media is reporting.
The Nigerian is said to be in isolation but in a "clinically stable" condition in Alicante's St John's Hospital, according to regional health authority sources quoted in Spanish online news websites today.
However, the patient is showing several signs of the virus including "high fever, physical discomfort, vomiting and bleeding", according to the authority.
The English language Spanish news site, The Spain Report, said that the man was admitted to the general hospital in Alicante with fever and several other symptoms.
He was then transferred to St John's Hospital, which is the designated centre in the city for dealing with Ebola cases.
The Nigerian patient's partner was with him, but she displayed no visible symptoms of Ebola and was not admitted to hospital.
Alicante is one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations.
Samples have been taken from the patient and were sent to the Spanish National Microbiology Centre near Madrid for analysis.
Results are expected within the next three days at the latest.
"An alert protocol has been activated preventively due to a suspected Ebola virus case," a spokeswoman for the hospital told The Spain Report.
She said the patient had told doctors he had arrived in Spain "a few days ago".
A local online news site reported the patient spent six hours in the emergency room of the first hospital before being transferred to the second.
A newspaper in Spain's eastern Valencia reported that health workers were wearing protective gear; and a special containment unit had been set up in the emergency room of St John's Hospital.
