Dublin: Gobsmacked Gangster John Gilligan's Enemies Are Unknown To Him

PARANOID drug trafficker John Gilligan said he doesn't know who his enemies are following the failed attempt on his life.

The gangster has broken his silence after being gunned down in March this year, admitting that he survived the assassination attempt by playing dead.

The 62-year-old was shot four times in his brother's Clondalkin home and shot four times.

"I hit my head off the ground and pretended I was dead. I actually cheated death by playing dead,"Gilligan said.

Describing the moment when the gunmen entered, he said: "I was sitting in the front room and I saw the two gunmen come to the front door.

"I thought the door was locked but it was actually open.

"I ran to the hallway, I was trying to make my way out to the back garden and over the back wall. The first gunman had an ordinary weapon and the second had an automatic weapon. The man with the automatic didn't shoot at all.

"I was shot in the back of the leg but just kept running. The second shot hit me in the side and that one went into my stomach," he said.

The mobster said that he could see there was a lot of blood.

Gilligan was rushed to Connolly Hospital where he was in a serious condition.

"I don't know who my enemies are and that is the fearful thing. I have no idea why these people wanted to kill me, I was totally gobsmacked," said Gilligan who subsequently fled the country in March.

He is currently hiding out in the UK where he is receiving treatment for his injuries.

He claims he still has a number of bullets lodged in his body since the shooting.

"I'm still feeling shook-up since the shooting but I am fairly fresh and in good spirits.

"I can come home whenever I like. I have enough friends in Ireland still to guarantee my safety," he said in an interview with a Sunday newspaper .

Meanwhile, it's a new beginning for the equestrian centre which was formerly owned by Gilligan, which has now opened again under a new owner.

It emerged earlier this year that the Jessbrook Equestrian Centre, which was seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau, had been sold.

Jumping

The official grand opening of the new centre - now called the Emerald International Equestrian Centre - will take place in Kildare at a three-day event next month beginning Friday 14 November.

Riders were given a opportunity to see its impressive facilities when the gates were thrown open yesterday for an outdoor jumping event.

Owner James Buckley has previously said: "This is the beginning of a new chapter for the place."

It is set on 55 acres, with an indoor and outdoor arena.

Dublin: Gang Leader Eamon Dunne's Murder "A Targeted Killing" Inquest Told: *UPDATED Link

Eamon Dunne was shot dead in the Fassaugh House pub on 23 April 2010

Criminal gang leader Eamon Dunne grabbed a lounge boy and tried to shield himself before he was shot dead in a Dublin pub, the Dublin Coroners Court heard today.

The city Coroner's Court was told that Dunne was shot dead while attending the birthday party of a friend at the Faussagh House pub four years ago.

The inquest recorded the cause of his death as an unlawful killing by persons unknown.
Witnesses said two gunmen walked into the pub on 23 April 2010 and shouted "down down everybody down", before firing a volley of shots at the 34-year-old father.

John Fairbrother whose birthday party Mr Dunne was attending said someone must have sent a text from the pub that night, outlining exactly where he was sitting, because "to get that right was very strange."

He said there were more than 20 people there and it was unbelievable that no one else was hit.

Jen Tiang, a Chinese lounge boy, said he was waiting there to be paid for a round of drinks when Mr Dunne grabbed him and tried to hide himself, before he heard the shots and ran to the ladies' toilet.

Mr Fairbrother told the Coroners Court today that Eamon gave him an Armani watch as a present.

He said he did not seem to be in fear of his life and that while Eamon did not know too many there they would have known him from the papers.

He said Eamon was supposed to bring the cake but it never arrived and he must not have bothered.

The detective inspector in charge of the investigation told the court that four men were involved in the murder, three got out and a driver remained in the car.

The shooting was captured on CCTV.

Two gunmen went into the pub, one remained outside and one witness said he held a gun to the head of a customer outside.

The post-mortem examination showed Mr Dunne was hit with eight bullets, shot twice in the back of the head and six bullets recovered from his body.
In total twelve shots were fired.

The Detective Inspector said it was a targeted killing, Mr Dunne was singled out and shot dead, and that there had been a number of threats on his life over the years.

He said a file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to a number of associated matters but the murder inquiry was still ongoing.

Balbriggan, N, Co Dublin: Garda Murder Probe Underway After Man Is Shot Dead: *UPDATED Links

*A man in his 30s has been shot dead in Balbriggan in Dublin.

The shooting happened on Clonard Street just after 9am.
A woman was shot in the upper leg and is being treated for her injuries at Beaumont Hospital.
Emergency services are at the scene of the shooting, which has been preserved for a technical examination.
The State Pathologist's office has been informed.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them in Balbriggan on 01-8020510.

Gardaí are investigating a fatal shooting incident which occurred on Clonard Street, Balbriggan shortly after 9am this morning.

A male believed to be aged in his mid 30s.

The scene is preserved pending a Garda technical examination.

Gardaí have arrested a man after an attempted kidnapping and robbery on the North side of Dublin this morning.

Its understood the incident began when two women were held hostage at a house in Malahide.
One of the women is understood to be a postmistress.

Armed Gardai are continuing to search for a second man.

*A search is under way for two men following a kidnapping at a post office in Dublin overnight.

Three armed and masked men forced their way into a home in Malahide and took three women hostage.
They then forced an employee of the post office at Bayside to hand over a substantial amount of cash this morning.
The raiders left the post office in a dark coloured car.
Members of the Emergency Response Unit, assisted by other garda units, intercepted the car on Malahide Road.
One man in his early 20s was arrested at the scene and an amount of cash recovered from the car.
A number of shots were discharged by gardaí at the scene.
The three women held hostage were not injured in the incident.
Gardaí are searching for two men in their 40s and 50s who fled the scene.
One of the men is described as having grey white hair, of chubby build, and 1.7m (5’10”) in height. He was wearing dark leggings and a similar top.
The other is described as having a chubby build, dark grey hair and was wearing blue runners with a green stripe.
Both men spoke with Dublin accents.
An incident room has been set up at Coolock Garda Station.
Anyone with information is asked to contact gardaí on 01-6664200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
The man in his 20s who was arrested at the scene is being detained at Coolock Garda Station.

An Irish man living in Spain has been shot dead in a bar on the Costa del Sol in a suspected gangland killing. The shooting took place in the suburb of Elviria near Marbella at around 5pm this evening.

*It is reported the gunmen entered a popular bar in the resort this afternoon and shot the man numerous times.

The victim has been named as drug dealer Gerard 'Hatchet' Kavanagh, The Sunday World report.

The criminal is well-known to gardai as an enforcer for an international gang based in Spain.

He was also involved in boxing.

Police are gathering evidence from a burnt-out BMW X3 that was discovered nearby shortly after the incident.

*An Irish man shot dead in Spain was a well-known criminal who closely associated with some of the biggest drug dealers in Ireland and who gardaí believe was the intended target of a botched murder bid last month.

The dead man, in his 40s and from Dublin, was singled out in a bar on the Costa del Sol on Saturday afternoon by two masked gunmen who fired at least nine shots, most of which are believed to have hit the victim.

The victim tried to run to safety when he saw the gunmen coming for him but collapsed on the premises when wounded. He was unresponsive when the emergency services later arrived at the scene.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The murder occurred just before 5.30pm local time at an Irish bar in Elivira, on the outskirts of Marbella.

A BMW the gunmen are believed to have been driven to and from the scene in was later found burnt out by Spanish police.

The murder will once again refocus attention on southern Spain as being popular with Irish criminals trying to escape the attentions of the Garda, especially the Criminal Assets Bureau.

The dead man had been jailed in the mid 1990s for years after being caught with a quantity of heroin.

He was described at that time as being on a “hit list” of major drug dealers drawn up by a vigilante group with links to the Provisional IRA. Some on the list had been shot dead or wounded.

At the time, and despite being in his mid 20s, he was described by Garda witnesses during his trial as “the major figure in drugs supplies in the Crumlin, Drimnagh and Dolphins Barn areas of Dublin for some time” and “a prime mover” in the underworld.

*He was also one of three major drug dealers that lived in the Kilnamanagh housing estate in Tallaght Dublin 24.
He lived in Mayberry Road - Paul Rice and Troy Jordan also lived in Kilnamanagh.

Of late, the dead man had remained heavily involved in organised crime in Ireland and Spain and was closely linked to the Irish drugs gang based in Spain headed by convicted Dublin drug dealer Christy Kinahan.

A former boxer, the deceased is believed to have worked as a debt collector and enforcer for Kinahan. He had been threatened by dissident Republicans in Ireland and had been warned by gardaí his life was in danger before leaving the Republic for Spain.

With the Kinahan gang supplying large quantities of drugs to Irish gangs in recent years, the man shot today and another well known Dublin underworld figure had regularly travelled back to Ireland to collect debts from Irish gangs on Kinahan’s behalf.

While the dead man had successfully avoided attempts by the Real IRA in Dublin to extort money from him when it was led by Dubliner Alan Ryan, the new IRA alliance that has emerged since Ryan’s murder had put further demands on him.

He is also believed to have been a target of underworld figures in Spain arising from his criminal activities there.

Last month the former European boxing champion Jamie Moore was shot in the legs after leaving a house in Marbella, where he was based as a trainer for Irish fighter Matthew Macklin.

Gardaí and the Spanish police believed he was a completely innocent party shot in a case of mistaken identity. The man shot dead today is believed to have been the intended target of that attack on Mr Moore.

It is believed two gunmen wearing balaclavas walked into the bar and fired several shots.

Following the incident the 45-year-old man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A burnt-out BMW, which may have been used in the incident, was found nearby, shortly after the murder.

It is now being examined by Spain’s national police force.

The victim is well known to the Gardai as a drug dealer and enforcer for an international drugs gang based in Spain.

He had been living in Spain with his partner and family and was also involved in boxing.

Police believe the victim was the intended target in an incident in Marbella last month in which the former European light-middleweight boxing champion, Jamie Moore, was shot and injured.
