Bray, Co Wicklow: Injured Man Found In People's Park Was Shot In Both Legs Say Gardai

Gardaí are appealing for information after a man was shot in both legs in a park in Bray, Co Wicklow.
The incident occurred at approximately 5.30pm in the People’s Park yesterday.
The alarm was raised by a member of the public who came across the injured man and phoned for an ambulance.
It then transpired the injuries suffered by the man were gunshot wounds, and gardaí were called to the scene.
The man was taken to Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin for surgery with what were described as non life threatening injuries.
A senior garda source said the man was not immediately known to investigating officers.
He said it was too early to say whether the incident was related to a gangland dispute or dissident republicans.
“It’s hard to say,” he said. “Obviously, it was fairly calculated if he was shot in both legs.”
The man has not been interviewed by gardaí but detectives hope to speak to him tomorrow.
The scene was preserved for a technical examination with gardaí carrying out a search for shell casings.
No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Bray, Co Wicklow: Over 88,000 Attend 2014 Air Show: *UPDATED

A record 88,000 people attended Ireland's biggest free air show in Bray, in Co Wicklow.
Pilots flew in from all across Europe to take part in the Bray Air Display.
Organisers of the show paid their respects to the passengers and crew of the Malaysia Airlines plane that went down in Ukraine during the past week.

As well as showcasing a range of modern and vintage aircraft, there were ground displays from the Irish Defence Forces, the RAF, the Mullingar Model Flying Club and Executive Helicopters.
Last year a record 85,000 spectators saw the event.
*A record-breaking 88,000 spectators craned their necks and fixed their eyes on the skies above the coastal town today for the annual Bray Air Display.
One of the many highlights of the three-hour display was the Black Knights Defence Forces Parachute Team led by jump master Capt Dennis Gowran and including Cpl Paul “Butch” Halpin, who celebrated his birthday in the skies above the Co Wicklow town.
The team carried out two jumps, their parachutes opening to reveal the Irish Tricolour as they descended from the heavens above Wicklow.
Aerobatic displays were a big part of the day’s events, including Ireland’s only civilian aerobatic team, Aer Dynamics, piloted by the “flying farmer” Gerry Humphreys and the “flying dentist” Eddie Goggins, who runs a dental practice in south Dublin.
Other high-fliers included the 1942 Boeing Stearman, used to train US cadet pilots during the second World War, and the “Miss Demeanour” Hawker Hunter, a subsonic jet that demonstrated a top speed of 450mph.
Display director Sé Pardy, a pilot for Aer Lingus, said the annual event was one of the biggest single-day air shows in Europe and it was growing in popularity every year.
He thanked Wicklow County Council, the Irish Aviation Authority, the Defence Forces, An Garda Síochána and Air Traffic Control, as well as the 100-plus volunteers “without who we couldn’t do this”.
A minute’s silence was observed for the victims of the Ukrainian air crash.

Moscow: Ten Dead, 106 Injured In Rush-Hour Subway Train Derailment: *UPDATED + PHOTOS

MOSCOW (AP) — A rush-hour subway train derailed in Moscow Tuesday, killing 106 people and injuring at least 106, emergency officials said. Several cars left the track in the tunnel after a power surge triggered an alarm, which caused the train to stop abruptly.

City Hall officials gave the death toll as 10. At least 106 people were hospitalized, of whom 50 are in grave condition, Itar-TASS said, quoting Moscow's health department chief, Georgy Golukhov.
Yuri Akimov, a Moscow representative of the emergency services, said in a televised briefing outside the Park Pobedy station that about 200 people were evacuated from the train, which was stuck between two stations in west Moscow.
Golukhov told Russian television that one person is still trapped in a wrecked train car but he is alive.
Several people who were gravely injured were taken out of the station and airlifted from the scene.
Photos on social media showed passengers walking along the tracks inside the dimly lit tunnel.
A man with a bloody cut on his brow told Rossiya 24 television outside the Park Pobedy station that he felt a jolt and the train abruptly came to a halt. "There was smoke and we were trapped inside," the man said. "It's a miracle we got out. I thought it was the end.
Park Pobedy is the deepest metro station in Moscow, 84 meters (275 feet) deep, which is making the rescue particularly hard.
While accidents are regular occurrences in the Moscow Metro, deadly incidents are rare.

Bray, Co Wicklow: Vandals Dislodged Boundary Wall Boulders That Derailed Dart Train *UPDATED

*Irish Rail says the partial derailment of a train in Co Wicklow could have resulted in fatalities.
The incident, involving a four carriage DART train last night, is being blamed on vandalism.
Thirty-three passengers escaped injury after the train came off the tracks after striking rocks near Bray at 11.15pm last night. Nobody was injured.
It happened around 100 metres north of the exit from the first tunnel on the rail track from Greystones to Bray.
Gardaí at Bray said a number of rocks were found on the railway track causing the train to derail.
They said: "From initial investigations carried out by An Garda Síochána and Irish Rail it appears that rocks may have been dislodged by unknown persons."
They are appealing for anyone who may have been walking on the Greystones/ Bray cliff walk between 8pm and 12 midnight last night to contact them.
They are also asking for anyone who may have seen a group or individuals at the start of the cliff walk in Bray or the entrance to the cliff walk in Greystones to get in touch them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bray Garda Station on 01-666 5300, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station. www.garda.ie
Stretches of the cliff side path between Bray and Greystones are guarded on one side by walls made up of large boulders and blocks cemented into place.
There are also sections of wire and steel mesh attached to the slope and rock faces at certain points to act as a stabiliser for sheer cliffs and above the railway lines on some points to act as nets to catch rockfalls.
The area where the boulder came from showed no sign of rockfall or landslide.
Irish Rail said its investigations showed the dislodged piece was a coping stone from the top of the boundary wall on the cliff side.
There is no CCTV along that section of the cliff walk.
Irish Rail chairman Phil Gaffney described the suspected vandalism as reprehensible.
“Actions like this are extremely serious and reprehensible and could have resulted in serious injury to the driver and passengers,” the chairman said.

Iarnród Éireann has said vandals caused a rockfall that led to a train derailing near Bray station in Co Wicklow last night.
Results of early investigations suggest that rocks were dislodged from a boundary wall above the railway line at Bray.
The line reopened at 9.50am after being closed overnight, and all services are now running normally.

Two sets of wheels on the four-carriage train came off the track as a result.
There were 33 passengers and the driver on board, however nobody was injured.
Up to 1,500 passengers experienced travel disruption this morning as a result.
Iarnród Éireann chair-designate Philip Gaffney said it was a very dangerous act, which could have resulted in fatalities.
The company is asking for anyone with information relating to the incident to contact gardaí as they are looking into the matter.
