The woman’s Citroen car was struck from behind by a car that is understood to have been under pursuit by the Gardai.

The car that was being chased by the Gardai is understood to have been occupied by a number of youths.

It is understood that the Gardai had intercepted the suspects at the M7 and were “trying to box them in at junction 12 and 13”, between Newbridge and Kildare village.

The woman was coming off a slipway when she was rear-ended by the car that was in pursuit by the Garda. It is believed that her car then slammed into a Garda patrol vehicle.

The fatal crash is being investigated by a team from the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) and the road is expected to remain closed for the night.

Diversions are in place.

GSOC said the collision occurred between two civilian vehicles, one of which was being pursued by gardai.

"A female has died at the scene. Five others have been taken to hospital," it said in a statement.
