Naas, Co Kildare: Gardai Appeal Following Man's Death After Assault In Town: UPDATED

UPDATE: A 42-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a man in Naas on Friday.
A 20-year-old man was injured in an altercation at Harbour View at around 10.20pm on Friday.
He was taken to Naas General Hospital but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. 
A man was arrested at scene and was detained at Naas Garda Station.
He appeared before a special sitting of Naas District Court this evening and was remanded in custody.
He was charged with assault causing harm.

A 20-year-old man has died following an assault at Harbour View in Naas.
A major garda investigation is underway in the wake of the fatal assault which took place close to the Grand Canal, off South Main Street, Naas, around 10.20pm yesterday (Friday, May 16).

A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is being detained in Naas Garda Station.

The incident occurred between Naas Community Library and the popular Vie de Chateaux restaurant at The Harbour.
It is understood that the young man. thought to be local, was assaulted, possibly with a weapon.

According to Gardai, a number of youths became involved in an altercation with another male. During the altercation the victim received head injuries.

When the Gardai arrived to the scene the young man was unconscious and the Gardai administered first aid until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to Naas Hospital and pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

It’s also believed that diners leaving the nearby restaurant rendered assistance to the stricken man shortly after the incident.
Minutes before midnight gardai sealed off the area denying access to the Sarto area from Basin Street. 

The road leading from the library towards Sarto was also closed off and by 1am a number of uniformed gardai were on duty in the vicinity behind “Crime Scene” tape.
